Methods of Genetic Testing

Our genes make us unique, and we have become more and more aware of the roles that they play in our lives. There are a few methods of genetic testing that can be done to determine different factors, depending on what you want to find out.

Some Genetic Testing Methods

Cytogenetic Testing – Testing Chromosomes

From structure, number, and arrangement, these tests determine abnormalities in chromosomes. This type of test can be analysed in the blood, bone marrow, amniotic fluid and other tissues taken from the patient.

Biochemical Testing – Protein Testing

Biochemical genetic diseases are present at birth and disrupt a key metabolic pathway. The tests measure protein enzymes and other factors in the protein using blood, urine, amniotic fluid, or cerebrospinal fluid.

Predictive Testing – DNA Testing

This type of genetic test can be done using saliva. This is the type of genetic testing method that Geneway conducts. It’s used to detect genetic disorders and other genetic factors that may influence performance, diet and more. This test can determine if there are risks of genetic disorders that may be passed down hereditarily.

Factors that can be tested for include:

  • Preferred fuel and energy source during exercise
  • Response to caffeine
  • Susceptibility to personality disorders
  • Lifestyle diseases passed down such as lactose intolerance, hypertension, salt sensitivity, etc.
  • Ability to deal with oxidative stress
  • Muscle and bone composition
  • Endurance and power potential
  • Susceptibility to injury and recovery time
  • Diet according to genetic make-up

Geneway™ offers a range of genetic tests that will teach you more about your genetic makeup and how you can adapt your lifestyle, diet, and environment to live your healthiest life. All we need is a swab of your saliva. For more information regarding home DNA testing and what you can expect, give us a call.
