What Is DIM (Diindolylmethane)? And How Does It Work

A few years ago, according to the Denver Vein Center, researchers discovered that old broccoli sprouts could help reduce the risk of cancer. The active compound responsible for this protective effect was identified as Diindolylmethane, also known as DIM. Since then, DIM has gained popularity in the health and wellness community, but what is DIM, and how does it work?

What Is DIM (Diindolylmethane)?

Diindolylmethane, also known as DIM, is a type of chemical found in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower and cabbage. These vegetables contain compounds called indoles (indole-3-carbinol). When people eat these vegetables, the acid in their stomach breaks down the indoles to form DIM.

How Does DIM Work?

One of the main effects of DIM is its ability to balance oestrogen and testosterone in the body. This is because DIM converts estradiol (a stronger form of oestrogen) into estriol (a weaker form of oestrogen).

Estradiol is the “bad” type of oestrogen that can increase the risk of breast and uterine cancers. On the other hand, estriol is considered a “good” oestrogen that has been shown to block estradiol’s multiplicative effect.

Aside from regulating hormone levels, DIM also has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It works by targeting numerous pathways and enzymes involved in inflammation, which can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

Should You Include DIM in Your Diet?

If you want to balance your oestrogen levels or have a family history of hormone-related cancers, then incorporating sources of DIM into your diet may be beneficial.

There are different ways you can include DIM in your diet and reap its benefits. The best way is to consume cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and cabbage. These vegetables are not only rich in DIM but also contain other important nutrients that promote good health. Alternatively, you can take DIM in supplement form.

However, it is important to note that DIM supplementation should not be used as a standalone treatment for any illness or disease. Before using DIM in supplement form, it is advisable to seek guidance from your healthcare provider.
