Sané du Plessis speaks about why she was glad she decided to do a DNA genetic test.

I decided to go all-in and perform the Gene-Combo test by Geneway, which combines the Gene-Diet, Gene-Well, Gene-Skin, and Gene-Renew DNA reports.

After a simple buccal swab was obtained from my mouth, my test was sent to the Geneway lab, and I received my results in two weeks. Bernice Venter, a Geneway trained dietician, sat with me to explain my results, and at the end of the session, I was glad I had decided to do the test. I had discovered so many answers to issues I already had such as why I’ve always struggled with my weight, why I am so easily overwhelmed in certain settings as well as causes of my anxiety.

Bernice mentioned that I have a high predisposition for an underactive thyroid, therefore I must have it examined regularly to monitor its functioning and that consuming ordinary iodized table salt and seafood can assist with my thyroid function.  She explained how a banting-style diet genetically won’t benefit me as it could actually cause additional weight gain. I need to rather focus on a higher protein and lower carbohydrate diet such as a Low-GI diet as this is the best type of diet for weight management and weight loss based on my genetic profile.

Bernice also informed me that I have a mutation on my COMT gene (also known as the ‘worrier’ gene) which leads to increased dopamine levels, this is associated with an increased susceptibility to anxiety under stressful situations. On the positive side, high dopamine levels also help with improved learning and focus as well as good problem-solving skills which is completely me. Bernice recommended I take a  Magnesium supplement as this can assist to optimise the functioning of my slow COMT gene.

Another high-risk gene mutation that I found out I carried is that I am susceptible to osteoarthritis – something I had never considered before. Luckily still being so young, I can lower the risk of osteoarthritis by choosing physical activity wisely (in other words not partaking in exercises such as running that is ‘heavy’ on the joints) and making sure I consume foods rich in Calcium and Vitamin D to maintain good bone health.

I also discovered that I have a predisposition for the accumulation of harmful estrogen and hormone malignancies metabolites, and a high risk for chronic inflammation, both of which can play a role in my weight struggles. Bernice suggested eating foods such as broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables which will help to get rid of the harmful estrogen, a fatty fish-rich source such as Omega-3 can also assist in fighting inflammation. As I am not a huge fan of most cruciferous vegetables, I have decided to rather take a DIM supplement, this will help provide the right nutrients which I am lacking from not consuming enough cruciferous vegetables.

I’m so glad I decided to do a DNA test since I now know how to address some of my current issues as well as try to prevent diseases that I’ve discovered I’m prone to by taking preventative steps and taking the necessary supplements to help improve my overall health.
