Frequently Asked Questions
What can Gene-Paternity be used for?
Gene-Paternity can be used for DNA paternity and kinship testing. Paternity testing can establish whether a tested man is the biological father of a child, while kinship testing can be used to investigate other biological relationships, such as siblings.
What if the alleged father is not available?
A biological relationship may sometimes be investigated through kinship testing, involving other biological relatives such as grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles or cousins. The appropriate relatives depend on the relationship that needs to be established.
What is the difference between a peace-of-mind test and a legal paternity test?
The underlying DNA testing methodology is the same. The difference is how the samples are collected and controlled.
With a peace-of-mind test, the kit is sent to you and samples are collected yourself. Legal testing requires a controlled sample-collection process, including identity verification and a documented chain of custody. If you need a test for legal purposes, an in-person appointment is required. Please contact info@geneway.co.za to book your appointment
Can a child be tested without the parent's consent?
For a minor, the appropriate parent(s) or legal guardian must complete the consent documentation included in the kit. Supporting documentation generally includes the child’s birth certificate, identification documents for the relevant parent(s) or legal guardian(s), and the completed consent forms.
If a parent is unavailable to provide consent, additional documentation may be required depending on the circumstances.
